ABOUT
‘What kind of legacy will you leave? Will memories sifted for meaning yield ghosts to confront, or delight in the living? What narrative will those you love construct? Will time spent ruminating oppress or release?’
The closing lines from the title track of ‘Coastlines’, mowgli’s long-awaited first full-length release, embody its overall animating drive. ‘We live amidst brittleness and fragility’, explains vocalist and guitarist Cameron Smith, ‘and Coastlines is an effort to navigate the fine lines in a brittle world between death and life.’ ‘Coastlines’ invites the listener to feel deeply, but to navigate these fine lines with openness and grace; allowing the fragility of existence to yield deeper love of others and self.
mowgli formed on the South Coast of New South Wales (Dharawal and Yuin land) circa 2010. A mainstay of the Sydney and South Coast emo scenes, mowgli has spent the best part of a decade and a half honing their genre-blending sound and heartfelt, powerful live performances.
After earning their live chops in DIY spaces, mowgli have gone on to share stages with La Dispute, Pianos Become the Teeth, mewithoutYou, This Will Destroy You, Ceremony, Tigers Jaw, Chon, Delta Sleep, Superheaven, Self Defence Family, sleepmakeswaves, and We Lost The Sea.
Now, in ‘Coastlines’, mowgli’s finely-honed brand of earnest, melodic post-hardcore melds with the dynamism of post-rock to give voice to our perpetual struggle for existential calm. Soaring choruses and pensive instrumentals give way to crushing walls of pure catharsis; an unashamed nod to the best of the post-hardcore tradition made famous by Thrice, Thursday, and Pianos Become The Teeth; combined with influences from post-rock and math acts like This Will Destroy You and Delta Sleep.
Oscillating between the joy of new life and the pain of death and suffering observed, ‘Coastlines’ is a celebration and lament in equal measure. From the pain of pregnancy loss and the terminal illness of loved ones to the joy of parenthood and rekindling of love’s flame, ‘Coastlines’ exhorts the listener to experience joy and suffering not as a mere observer, but as a companion and active participant; allowing the self to be moulded, shaped and refined.
